Track Your Miles, Trim Your Costs
The average American drives over 14,000 miles each year.
Do you think you drive more or less than that amount? For many, it’s an afterthought — just a number jotted down during car insurance renewal or when leasing a car. However, understanding your annual mileage has real-world implications that affect your finances in a number of ways, impact insurance decisions and, of course, affect your environmental footprint.
Use this calculator to estimate your annual and weekly mileage.
Average Mileage Calculator
How to Use the Calculator
You can estimate your average mileage by tracking your odometer to see how much you drive in a week (provided you track during a week that mirrors your normal routine), and multiplying out from there.
Or you can use Google Maps to find the mileage of your job, kids school or any other daily commute you have. Then add this number into the calulator to have it compute your weekly and annual numbers.
You can also include any longer roadtrips you make. Visit your elderly aunt who lives 50 miles away, every month? Have a standing beach trip with friends twice a year? Include all trips that factor into your average mileage.
Finally, add your mileage for errands and short trips. While not having as big an impact on your annual mileage, these can still add up. Estimate where you go on the average weekened or after work and guage how many miles that might add to your week.
Once you enter all of your estimates, the calculator will deliver your results for weekly and annual averages.
3. Maintenance and Repairs
Car manufacturers provide maintenance schedules based on mileage intervals—oil changes, tire rotations, brake checks, etc. Underestimating your annual mileage may cause you to delay these tasks, leading to premature wear or costly repairs. Knowing in advance how soon you might hit mileage milestones can also help you budget for these expected repairs.
4. Leasing Contracts
If you lease your vehicle, exceeding the annual mileage limit in your contract can result in hefty penalties, often 10 to 25 cents per mile over the limit. Accurately estimating your yearly driving habits is critical when negotiating lease terms.
Wrapping up
Knowing your annual mileage isn’t just about ticking a box for insurance. It can help you plan your finances in a number of ways and keep you better informed about upcoming expenses. From premium costs to maintenance schedules and vehicle value, being aware of how far you drive helps you make smarter decisions behind the wheel.
